When you contact me to discuss an indexing project or to inquire about my rates or delivery time, there will be questions I'll ask:

-- What type of book is it? Trade, scholarly, textbook,

technical, cookbook, etc.

-- The number of indexable pages? -- The date I can expect page proofs? -- The date index is due? -- Are there any length constraints (a limit to the number

of index pages or lines)?

-- Is display material indexable (illustrations, photo-

graphs, charts, tables, etc.)?

-- Are footnotes/endnotes indexable? -- How many levels of subheadings are allowed? -- Will you require any other indexes in addition to a

subject index?

Many publishers have their own index style guidelines. If you don't have one, there will also be decisions to make about Index Styles.
