High from a roof top you look down on the street corner lit by the cold gleaming crescent of a moon, when a figure cloaked and hooded in black velvet steps from the shadows. This could be the break you need. The figure glides to the center of the street raising two smooth milky white hands he whispers something. You can not hear what is said. The moon is suddenly obscured by dark ominous clouds and shadowy forms flit about in the shadows. "And so the siege begins," says a chill rasping voice from behind. From behind comes a powerful blow knocking you off balance that sends you sprawling forward and over the edge. Falling , falling , falling....... searing pain shoots through you! Then nothing........
On Monday detective Jack sat at his desk watching a small portable T.V. drinking coffee and eating doughnuts.
"In other news, The police found a body yet to be identified at the corner of 16th and Main. Police are calling it a suicide however all they will tell is that it appears that the person jumped from the roof of one of the surrounding buildings. Also, a convicted murderer, Mike Polter, escaped the other day after serving only nine years of his life term. Mike Polter was convicted for killing his daughters killer one week before the trial was to have taken place. More at the six o'clock edition. Thank you for watching channel nine." says the lady reporting just before a commercial comes on.
"Jack I got a case for you!" shouts Jack's boss from his office. Jack quickly turns off the T.V., sets his doughnut down and runs for his boss's office carrying his mug with him encase he were to need it.
"Jack here is the case."
His boss tosses him a folder.
"Should be pretty easy. Murder, it was done with what appears to be some old dagger."
Jack left the office carrying the folder under his arm and headed for the secretary's desk.
"I want all the folders on any recently escaped felons especially those who committed murder."Jack said in a gruff voice.
"I'll have that for you right away Jack." replied the secretary.
Jack return to his desk read the report. It seems pretty normal except for the weapon and then he went to the crime scene. Once again everything seemed normal except there seemed to be no evidence. When Jack returned, the files of recently escaped felons was waiting for him along with some extra files of every criminal recently released from prison. Jack looks over at the clock to see that its already eight o'clock, a half hour later than he's supposed to work. Jack heads home to get some sleep and to look over the criminal files.
When Jack gets to work the next morning he hears there has been a another murder linked to his case. He picks out a couple of files from the stack including the one on Mike Polter. Now all Jack can do is wait for a lead. Jack drinks coffee and generally makes a nuisance of himself while his boss complains he should be doing something useful.
In the morning Jack drives his beaten up 1983 ford through the dismal rain soaked street to work. "Nice day for paper work huh Jack." says the secretary has he comes through the door soaking wet with umbrella in hand. "Yea just great ." says Jack sarcastically. Jack goes to his desk, looks at the growing pile of papers on all the new deaths, and flicks on the T.V.
"First let's go to the weather man for a look at todays weather ,Tom. Well for today it looks like were are going to have rain a good part of the day. Later on it should be cloudy and cool with occasional showers. Over night a another big storm should hit. The national weather service is putting out a sever storm warning in affect from eleven o'clock tonight to six o'clock tomorrow evening. Back to you, Cindy. Also there has been a boiler room explosion at Carthright High School. School has been concealed there for today and tomorrow. In other news there has been a another murder linked to two previous ones." at this point Jack turned off the T.V. and gets to work looking through the files. Jack begins to find all the characteristics of the murders. He notices that they were all stabbed with the same knife and each body was put into a laying position with their feet together and arms at their sides. Then it hit him, every victim had blue eyes. That meant that there was a good chance that the next victim would have blue eyes. Jack searched through he criminal files again and found the file of Mike Polter. Mike Polter was a recently escaped murderer convicted of killing his daughters killer one week before the trial and his victim had blue eyes. A psychologist had also said that he was volatile at the time and may be prone to violent vengeful acts unless he recovered from this state. That gave him a motive now to prove he did it. First he would have to find this man. Jack set his team to it. Nothing to do now but what. Later that day he received word that there had been two more murders since the morning one. Finally Jack decides to call it a night.
In the morning there has been a another murder bringing the count to six. Also his team has found Mike Polter. Turns out he took the same name as before and pretended to be a different person. Jack heads over to Mike's house to question him. Once there, Jack meets Mike. Mike denies having anything to do with the murder. Jack thinks that this is probably the killer after all he has no alibi for any of the murders, but still. Jack decides to look into some other possibilities. There had already been six murders. One or two a day was a lot of murders for one day perhaps it was a group of people. By the time he gets back to the office there has been a another murder. Sure has been a lot of murders lately Jack thinks to himself as he tries to figure out who else might have done it. When it hits him, the group who might have done it would be a occult and might have members who go to Carthright High School, which was out today and yesterday. That would explain why there had been more murders. Jack goes to the secretary. "See if you can find any files on occult groups that have members in Carthright High School." Jack says. "Give me a couple of minutes." replies the secretary. Jack then goes to his boss and his boss says that if Jacks is going to arrest anybody he better have more proof that he has now. So Jack asks for an autopsy to be done on one of the bodies. They tell him the results should be ready in two days.
When he return to his desk, the files he asked for are waiting for him. Jack finds one group that has been under investigation for sometime that has been sacrificing animals. They also have almost all members that go to Carthright High School. Jack goes home once again to get some rest.
When Jack arrives there hasn't been a murder for the day yet but Jack thinks that there is bound to be one later. Once again, its a boring day, until Jack hears there has been a another murder and there is finely some evidence left behind. Jack goes to the crime scene and finds a large ruby laying on the ground next to the body. Jack takes the gem to a gemologist at a local jewelry store and he says that the gem was definitely cut in medieval times and by the look of it was probably attached to some weapon or armor. Jack heads back to the office to figure out what to do and see if the autopsy report was ready.
When Jack arrived he found the report on his desk. Apparently, none of the victims were killed by the stab wounds instead it was a plant poison which kills instantly with no pain. That meant that Mike Polter was pretty much cleared but the occult still could have done it. Jack looks into groups that are interested in medieval studies and finds group that has several daggers on display. Jack sets up a time tomorrow to take a tour of the display with one of the members. He knows that today or tomorrow will be the time to catch the crook because if its the occult then they will probably strike three or four times tomorrow because it is Saturday.Jack heads home driving through the dark streets thinking about the case. When he arrives home, he receives a phone call "Hello I'm with Color Sycnc Contacts were doing a survey would you please answer some questions for me even if you don't where contacts." say a friendly man on the other end. " Sure ." replies Jack. "Good. Now first what color eyes do you have now?" says the man on the phone.
"hazel."
"And if you could have any color eyes what color would you choose?"
"Well I don't know maybe gray."
"Thank you for your time sir, good night." With that, the man hung up and Jack went to bed.
In the morning there has already been two murders. Jack heads for his appointment with a member of the group involved in medieval studies. When he final arrives he meets with the member and finds out his name is Adam. Adam identifies the gem as being from the hilt of a medieval dagger for sure but can't say anything more about it. On the tour they come to the groups most prized possession a 17th century dueling dagger worth over seven thousand dollars and its missing.... Adam is obviously upset, he quickly gives the names of everyone who would have the key and tells a little about each of them. He also agrees not to tell anyone so that whoever stole it won't know that they're on to him.
Jack makes a list of all the names on a scrap of paper. Jack notes that Paul Kessler is a chemistry teacher at Carthright High school. Other then that there doesn't seem to be any thing out of the ordinary. When Jack gets back to the office there has been a another murder. Jack runs all the names through the police computer and has his team go out and question almost everyone. Everyone has a alibi except Paul Kessler and David Gibson. David Gibson is also a member of the occult. That meant that the occult could have done it but Paul Kessler's could have too. Jack began a stake out of both Paul Kessler and David Gibson's houses. Later that night, another murder took place but still no leads.
In the morning there has been a another killing Bringing the running number of murders to eleven. There is also a lead. Paul Kessler Was seen entering the place where the stolen dagger was kept. Jack went strait to Paul Kessler's house. Once there, Jack questioned him and noticed that one of the things he seemed obsessed about was revenge on Hitler for all the death he caused that gave him a motive and the means now for the proof. Later that day, Jack came back with a search warrant. He fond the dagger with one of its gems missing and a vial of the poison used in the murders. Paul confessed to the murders and to killing one other person by shoving them off a roof. A psychologist also declares him to be mentally disturbed.
Paul Kessler was convicted on eleven accounts of third degree murder, one account of carrying a concealed weapon and one account of grand theft. He was sentenced to twelve consecutive life terms with no parole and death by lethal injection.
