The Making of Parrot

J. Thomas Walker

In the beginning their were many more music contests then today because the animals were all just finding there voices. Each one was running around saying "Listen to my voice! Listen to my voice!" then bellowed forth their sound. As a result, the world was filled with noise!

One day, however, Parrot began to sing and all the other animals stopped to watch and listen. At that time, Parrot was huge with beautiful shimmering feathers like a peacocks all over its body. It's voice much more beautiful and loud! Meanwhile Man had just asked Women to marry him. Before she could answer, Man heard the Parrot's song and ran outside to see Parrot sing. Man loved parrots song and invited him in for dinner. After dinner, Man asked him to stay forever and promised to feed him and give him shelter. Man said Parrot could have Woman's bed. Woman did not like this for she hated his song, it gave her a headache, and she did not want to sleep on the floor. What right did Man have to give away her bed for Parrot. However, Woman was forced to agree because Parrot was nearly as tall as she.

The next day, when it came time for the song contest, Man, who normally judged it, said that parrots voice put him in a class of his own and that he would judge today. Many animals entered however, Loin ,who it was rumored had been practicing on the plains, was generally thought to be the best. When it came time for Parrot to announce the winner, he stepped forward and declared that he had the best song. He then began to sing and Man agreed with him. Then all the animals began to dance except for the animals who had entered the contest and Woman, of course.

Woman decided to leave and began to pack her bags however the lion and other animals who had lost that day begged her to give them two days. So they went to God and asked him if he would sing at the Man and Woman's wedding. He said he would be honored to. They then told Woman their plan. That night Woman woke Man and asked him if he still wished to marry her. He said yes and she told him they would have the wedding tomorrow and Parrot would sing. The next day before the wedding, Woman told Parrot that there had been a mistake and that the animals had invited a stranger to sing at the wedding. She said that surely they would both have to sing. Parrot decided they would have a wedding song contest between him and the stranger.

God showed up dressed as a beggar and carrying a bee hive for a wedding present. When the ceremonies were over and it was time to sing Parrot began to sing. Then a large blue fly came flying from his mouth. More and more flies came from his mouth and God said he would sing until Parrot could get his throat cleared. God began to sing and flowers sprang up from the ground and as each flower opened a butterfly came forth each one different. Then God turned his song against Parrot and Parrot began to shrivel and burn.

At the last minute, Woman stepped between Parrot and God. Carrying Parrot into the house she found that he now had only a few colors of feathers and they did not shimmer. His legs were all burnt and scaly. That is how parrot was made!
