Games Workshop Commissar Yarrick:

Painted in 2005 for the first Relic Painting & Army Displays Forum Painting Competition, this is the first competition-quality figure I'd painted in about 13 years. He also represents my first full-on application of techniques I've been playing around with since returning to miniature painting: using additives to my paints, gradation of highlights, Ink mixtures for shading, and semi-decorative basing. I painted the power claw more or less according to the color steps indicated in the GW White Dwarf issue where Yarrick and his nemesis, Ghazkhull, debuted - a basecoat of GW Sunburst Yellow, with blending in steps through GW Blood Red, GW Go Fasta Red, and highlights of GW Blazing Orange and GW Fiery Orange. Although not winning the competition, he was fairly well received and drew a lot of positive comments. In a way, I painted him as a throwback to Games Workshop's "red period," when a majority of figures were painted in bright, bold colors.
